Genesis
of "Woke Up to Everything"
Two
ideas...one song...and a long time in between...
Lyrically, very influenced by war scenes and the attempt to be happy
during sad times.
Verse lyrics were originally written first, but with different melodies
and different chords.
But no chorus.
Chorus was originally intended for a different tune that, quite honestly
sucked. But I LOVED the chorus!
So, out came the knives and sculpture tools: I took the melodies and
reworked them so they worked in the same time signature as the chorus,
as well as the same key (original verse was in D, not C).
And then it started to come together. First up came the drum part, which
took some figuring out. Then wrote the bass and guitars on the fly as
the piece was being recorded, and all I needed (and what came last) was
a bridge. Voila. Done! |
