Genesis
of "RadioFree"
RadioFree was
based on a riff played on acoustic guitar, then brought to a live jam
session and played with an electric. I could never get the rhythm right
when I was singing, and I had no ideas further than a melody line over
this simple riff. But then I transferred the song riff to the piano and
everything started to change and not change at the same time.
I wanted the slow meandering slam of a Deftones song, but played against
almost an almost jazz, blues like melody. And I wanted to be fierce and
restrained at the same time, immediate and desolate/lonely in the same
space.
And I wanted Horns.
I don't know how it happened, but I knew the song had to go somewhere
after the 2nd chorus because I had essentially explained myself as a
writer. It was time for the music to take over. I get sick and tired of
same old same old arrangements all the time, and given that the song is
about the desolation any music lover should and probably does feel when
listening to the current state of radio, I wanted it to go to a place
where each instrument had its place in a unit and in its own
individuality, where it felt free. The song itself is almost two
bookends to this kind of musical storm. I hope you enjoy it as much as I
enjoyed recording it. |
